Smiddy Cottage is situated in the south west corner of South Uist where many thatched ruins can be seen amongst the empty and beautiful landscape. With a view over a lochan and stunning beaches only 5 minutes walk away this is the perfect location for a relaxing island holiday and truly getting away from it all. South Uist has over 20 miles of white beaches running down the west coast and amazing views in all directions.
From South Uist it is possible to make day trips to the islands of Barra and Vatersay, a journey of approximately 35 minutes. Using many of the small causeways you can also explore the islands of Eriskay, Benbecula, North Uist, Berneray, Balishare and Grimsay. The Isle of Harris can be reached by car ferry and you can then explore Harris, Lewis and Scalpay. For the more adventurous, day boat trips to the enchanted archipelago of St Kilda are possible in the summer months.
Uist is the perfect place for bird watchers with eagles, short ear owls, hen harriers, and many more breeds to be seen including the rare corncrake. The machair with its many pretty flowers stretches for miles upon miles up the west coast of the island: the mountains to the east make for a more energetic day out. There are villages to explore and sea lochs for fishing and Ben Mor reaching almost 2000 feet is well worth a climb rewarding you with panoramic views of the surrounding islands. Smiddy Cottage has two fishing rods for guest to use, if you are into more serious fishing then fishing permits can be purchased from the local estate office. South Uist is a very friendly island with a strong Hebridean community - come and enjoy a quieter pace of life!
