The Old School House is a luxurious holiday home to base yourself at whilst you discover the delights of the Scottish highlands. Located in Kylesku, with stunning views over Loch Glencoul, this holiday property has an amazing location.
On your doorstep are Sutherland's secluded white sand beaches, bird watching, geological exploration, cycling, wildlife spotting, hill walking, sea kayaking and fishing. From Kylesku, in season, boat trips run to the 650ft Eas-Coul-Aulin, Britain's highest waterfall, located at the head of Loch Glencoul; otters, seals, porpoises and minke whales can occasionally be spotted along the way. Boat trips also make regular trips out to Kerracher Gardens, only accessible from the sea - a riot of colour and exotic vegetation in the rugged highland scenery. There are lots of good walks around Kylesku: one of the most popular is the half-day low-level route along the north side of Loch Glendhu to a picturesque pebble beach.
Within a 30-mile radius are the spectacular mountains, Quinag and Suilven and Munros including Ben More Assynt and Conival. The Handa Island Bird Sanctuary, of which the star attraction are the puffins, present from late May to mid-July. Durness is the most north-westerly village on the British mainland and nearby is Snoo Cave, a gaping hole in a sheer limestone cliff, and beautiful Balnakiel beach. Durness is also the jumping-off point for rugged Cape Wrath, the windswept promontory at the Scotland's north-west tip. Lochinver sits on a sheltered bay 16 miles north of Ullapool in the wilds of the far north-west, here you'll find a Tourist Information office and other attractions.
The area is part of Scotland's first Global Geopark and is of major geological significance. At 3,000 million years old, the rocks at the seashore are even older than the hills. At Inchnadamph national nature reserve you will find caves, tunnels and underground streams. Walk along a dry riverbed at Traligill and visit the Bone Caves where archaeologists found human remains dating back 4500 years along with the bones of animals long extinct in Scotland. Look across the loch to the mountains and you will clearly see the scars of two major thrust planes.
Kylesku has been much admired and the great Alfred Wainwright wrote of the area "Anyone with an eye for impressive beauty will not regard time spent at Kylesku as wasted. Twin peaks of Quinag dominate an awe-inspiring picture of great contrasts, of glittering waters cradled in the arms of dark and sinister heights: the silence is profound and the loneliness almost fearful. I could spend a day here, just looking. Kylesku is a wonderful place."
