Turnberry, Ayrshire
In addition to being home to numerous golf courses, this area of Ayrshire is also of historical interest. A ten minute drive from Turnberry the impressive Culzean Castle which was designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century perches on the cliffs over looking the sea towards Arran. One of Culzean’s greatest assets is its country park with around 17 miles of pathways giving access to mature deciduous stands, a conifer plantation, small clearings, glades and quiet glens. Swan Pond is a five hectare man-made pond surrounded by a footpath. Sheltered on three sides by mature woodland it is an ideal spot for watching waterfowl. The Deer Park is home to a small herd of red deer and llamas.
The small island of Arran is easily reached by car and then the ferry from Ardrossan Harbor. Visit the distillery, taste the local beer, admire the standing stones of Machrie Moor, tour Brodick Castle, or climb to the top of Goat Fell.
No trip to Ayrshire is complete without a trip to Robert Burns Birth Place Museum in Alloway, Ayr. Burns is National Bard and his poetry and songs are loved all over the world. The museum houses the world’s most important collection of Burns artefacts and works and entry to the museum includes the chance to visit the cottage where he was born and raised.
Five miles south of Ayr Dunure Castle stands in ruins on a rocky promontory on the Carrick coast, overlooking the small harbour of Dunure.Like most tourist locations Ayshire also offers a broad range of activities for those wishing to be more energetic. Galloway Forest Park, known for its walking, cycling and bird-watching, has the darkest skies in Europe, making it a superb place to view the stars and planets. Being on the coast, Turnberry also offers the opportunity to take long walks on Turnberry Bay Beach.
