Riverside fishing cottage on river Nith

Riverside Cottage, Blackaddie House Hotel, Sanquhar, Dumfries and Galloway

Fishing Cottage is part of a group of three beautiful stone cottages, carefully converted from an attractive traditional barn and stables to lovely holiday cottages. Dumfries & Galloway is a very beautiful, rural part of Scotland and the holiday cottages are set on the River bank, with gorgeous views overlooking John Kerr Pool, a salmon pool just 100 metres up river).

The River Nith runs through the heart of the valley with the Southern Uplands to the north and the dramatic Solway Coast to the south. There are quiet country roads ideal for exploring on foot or by bicycle.

Fifteen minutes away is the 18th century village of Thornhill which is an ideal place to spend a relaxing afternoon shopping and exploring the friendly craft shops and boutiques. Other interesting villages in the vicinity include Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village, and its neighbour Leadhills which owes its existence to lead mining. At Wanlockhead, tourists can now take a journey back in time and there are even sessions available in the summer when you can try your hand at panning for gold.

The beautiful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway has numerous attractions and throughout history has been home to many artists from Robert Burns to the more recent arrival of Andy Goldworthy whose environmental scultpures can be seen around the area. There are three castles close by, Closeburn Castle, Morton Castle and the famous Drumlanrig Castle which houses an interesting art collection with works by Holbein, Rembrandt and da Vinci. Other attractions worth visiting include Threave Gardens near Castle Douglas, belonging to the Scottish National Trust, and the Glenkiln Sculpture Park which sits amidst breathtaking scenery.

The cottages are adjacent to Blackaddie House Hotel where you will find a good array of single malts in the cozy bar for you to try. This boutique country house hotel has an award-winning restaurant which is another big attraction for staying at Fishing cottage!
