The Granary
Sheriff Hall, North Berwick, East Lothian

The Granary is set on the beautiful East Lothian estate of Balgone, situated 2 miles south of the seaside town of North Berwick, 20 miles east of Edinburgh. The estate stretches over 1000 acres of beautiful private farmland and estate grounds, with miles of peaceful paths and tracks to explore, walk, ride or cycle along. You are welcome to bring dogs and/or horses with you, stabling or paddocks can be arranged and the walking and riding is hard to beat.

The surrounding area boasts some of the finest golf courses in the world, miles of stunning coastline with deserted beaches only minutes away, pubs and restaurants aplenty for every taste, and Edinburgh only half an hour away on the local train service.

The Granary is a beautifully restored and renovated building in a traditional farm steading. It has an extensive garden area so there is plenty of room for the children to kick a ball about. In addition, the house offers an enclosed garden and patio area, great for barbecues and for little ones to play safely. This holiday house also has a swimming pool - on its own only 15 metres from the house and has its own adjoining garden, ideal for sunbathing!

If you can drag yourselves away from the estate, then the award-winning Seabird Centre is right on the doorstep in North Berwick. A little further afield, make a trip to the Museum of Flight where you can tour Concorde, or you may choose to visit Myreton Motor Museum, ancient castles such as Dirleton and Tantallon, or stunning gardens. There is a choice of excellent restaurants and interesting shops in North Berwick.

This really is an area that offers something to everyone, of any age. Observe the Bass Rock, the largest gannet colony in the world - take a boat trip and see it close up, you may also spot the puffin seals. Sea-fishing trip are available from the harbour, and North Berwick Yacht Club runs sailing courses for all ages and standards. Diving is very popular in the area, especially off May Island. The East Lothian coastline covers miles of beaches (Gullane, Tyninghame and Yellowcraigs to name a few) with beautiful sand dunes, the children will love it. The coast also offers exceptional bird life, from Aberlady Bay bird sanctuary all the way to the Tyne estuary at Dunbar. Other attractions include John Muir Way and Park, East Links family park in Dunbar, Musselburgh racecourse, go-cart centre at Gladsmuir, Glenkinchie distillery, Belhaven brewery, walking in the Lammermuir Hills and great cycle routes - try the hill foot trail and stop for lunch in Garvard or Gifford.

And don't forget that this is also an ideal location for a golfing holiday in Scotland and you are spoilt for choice - there are three courses within 2 miles, championship and kids' courses alike, but you are also not far from the three courses at Gullane, or the world-famous Muirfield - you could choose to play a different course each day!
