Blairgowrie is set in the heart of the beautiful Big Tree County of Perthshire on the historic route north from Perth to the Highlands. The town grew on the banks of the River Ericht where numerous mills once worked and the famous berry fields surrounding the town produced soft fruit for the jam factories in Dundee. Although the mills are now gone, the town retains its sense of history, is popular with tourists and has a strong retail base.
The area is a wonderful location for a holiday with easy access by road or rail to many parts of Scotland. It is possible to explore the major cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen which are only 1 hour 30 minutes away via the motorway network. Both Perth and Dundee with their many attractions can be reached in 30 minutes. From Dundee, the Tay Road Bridge takes you to Fife where you can explore the picturesque coastal villages and visit the historic town of St Andrews famous for its ancient university buildings and churches, and its many golf courses.
Head north out of Blairgowrie and you climb through the wonderful scenery of Glenshee to Braemar and on to Royal Deeside and Balmoral, the Scottish home of the Royal family. Alternatively from Bridge of Cally head west through Strathardle to Pitlochry with its famous salmon leap and Festival Theatre. There are numerous visitor attractions in the area and opportunities for a range of outdoor pursuits from shooting and fishing to mountain biking and white water rafting.
The area is rich in history and there are many historic houses and beautiful gardens to visit: Scone Palace, Glamis Castle, Dunkeld Cathedral and Drummond Castle Gardens to name but a few. There are also distilleries, museums and galleries. Alternatively, you can take advantage of the peace and quiet at South Littleton of Rattray and enjoy the spacious craft room and the on site therapist offering a range of treatments including massage and reflexology.
