There is no shortage of things to do in and around Pitlochry, 'the Gateway to the Highlands', whether it be adventure sports, sightseeing, fine dining or relaxing. Pitlochry truly is a gem and a place with spectacular scenery throughout all the seasons. For those interested in hill walking, the majestic Ben-y-Vrackie is the perfect hill for beginners and dog walkers. The route leaves directly from the doorstep of the Auld Smiddy and boasts panoramic views of Pitlochry and the surrounding area. Black Spout Forest in Pitlochry is abundant with red squirrels, a diversity of wildlife and an impressive 60 foot waterfall. The walk leads to Edradour distillery just in time for a wee dram! Also nearby are the Munros Shiehallion and Beinn a' Ghlo for those who feel like a good hike.

Perthshire is also renowned for its cycle tracks - what a great way to explore this part of Scotland and get fit at the same time! If golfing is your sport, there are over 40 courses to choose from. Pitlochry itself has a great course with wonderful views over the town and beyond. Fishermen will love the variety of well stocked lochs and rivers in the county. Maybe extreme sports are more your thing. There are plenty of adventures to be had including bungee jumping, white water rafting and bouldering. There are a number of options for skiers with Aviemore one hour away and Glenshee 30 minutes away.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre has regular plays and festivals. The Winter Words Festival draws a large crowd to celebrate literary works and The Dougie Maclean Amber Festival has performances from talented musicians from around the world. Next to the theatre, the Explorers garden is a wonderful woodland garden which celebrates the stories and results of Scottish Plant Hunters. Divided into glades and zones representing different parts of the world, this is a haven of peace and quiet after the bustle of the town. For whisky lovers there are plenty of distilleries to choose from including Edradour (the smallest in Scotland), Bells and Dewars. The legendary Moulin Inn next door was established in 1695 and brews four of its own ales - a pint of Braveheart is highly recommended! Blair Castle is nearby, and just outside Perth is Scone Palace where you can enjoy a pleasant day out for all the family.

No matter what your interests are, there is something for everyone at all times of the year. You'll enjoy coming back to the Auld Smiddy, a warm and homely cottage with a cosy log burning stove, where you can reflect on your day and leave feeling both relaxed and inspired!

Accommodation:
Adjoining the welcoming Moulin Inn, the cottage has a charm all of its own. It is stone built and was formally a blacksmith's home and workshop but has been completely refurbished to give a cosy and welcoming location for your holiday.

Arriving into the front hallway of Auld Smiddy Cottage you will find a quaint sitting room with comfortable seating for 6, an original stone fireplace and a cosy log burner. The kitchen is very well equipped with fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, microwave, gas hob and electric oven and follows through to the lovely bright sun room and dining area at the back of the cottage, with seating for 6 around the table. Doors lead out into the enclosed back garden with decking area for the BBQ - a real wee sun trap, Scottish weather permitting!

The first double bedroom is downstairs with beautiful crisp bedlinen. Hand built wardrobes with mirror, lighting and seat lead through to the modern ensuite with telephone shower attachment above the bath. Heated towel rails warm the towels provided. This bathroom is also accessible from a small hallway leading from the living area. Upstairs are two further bedrooms - a beautifully furnished double bedroom and an inviting twin room. The double bedroom has high quality bed linen with plenty of cushions. There is ample storage in the handmade fitted wardrobes with mirror, lighting and seat. The ensuite has stylish large sink with storage underneath, good electric shower and heated towel rail. With its "Jack and Jill" doors it can be accessed conveniently from both bedrooms. The twin room is very cosy and has plenty of storage.
