Fortingall is blessed by being located in one of the most beautiful parts of Scotland with spectacular hills, lochs, rivers, woodland and fields. There is an abundance of wildlife including the red squirrel, the soaring golden eagle and majestic red deer. Best of all you will find wide, open spaces where you can walk, climb or cycle and enjoy the magnificent scenery and all highland Perthshire has to offer.
The historic, conservation village of Fortingall can be bathed in sunlight even on the shortest day of the year. Designed by Arts and Crafts architect James M MacLaren, the village features thatched roofs and crow-stepped gables, and the hotel and church at the east end of the village echo this design. The village also boasts of being birthplace to Pontius Pilate as well as having a 5,000 year-old yew tree!
If you wish to undertake activities other than walking or cycling, there is the Highland Adventure Safari with amazing wildlife. White water rafting is available on the River Tay along with other watersports on Loch Tay. Golf is also popular, and there are a number of delightful courses, both nine and eighteen holes, within easy reach of Fortingall. For those who like field sports, ask at the hotel next door and they will be happy to put you in touch with the local ghillies, who, depending on the season, can arrange trout and salmon fishing, deer stalking and pheasant and partridge shooting (this does require prior booking though!).
