Mull is seen by some as the gem of the Western Isles. It is particularly renowned for the diversity of wildlife, the local produce and the areas of outstanding natural beauty. Whether its the buzz of the northern end of the island or the tranquillity of the southern end, a trip here is an absolute must.
The northern end of the island, namely Tobermory, is famed for its association with Balamory, a children's TV programme. It is instantly recognisable with its brightly coloured harbour houses and attracts a high number of tourists every year. Iona is a small island accessible by a short ferry trip from the southern tip of Mull. It was first settled by St Columba in 563AD and was the birthplace of Scottish Christianity. A visit here will give you an insight into early Celtic Christianity with the Abbey, the Nunnery and the graves of several of the early Scottish Kings, allegedly including Macbeths victim, Duncan.
The island wildlife repertoire includes such delights as the white-tailed sea eagle, golden eagles, merlins, puffins, hen harriers, otters, whales and dolphins: Mull is recognised as having the greatest biodiversity of any area in the UK. Organised tours are available to optimise your viewing potential. The beaches that you will find here are outstanding with pure white silky sand and transparent deep blue seas. If youre prepared for a short walk then you can reach secluded bays tucked away between the rocks.
The island is so diverse that there is an activity to suit everyone. There are castles, wildlife excursions, a whisky distillery, a brewery, Mull Theatre and endless opportunities for coastal and hill walking. There are a number of various walks all over the island - they range from Tirerighan, a walk to an abandoned highland settlement, to the Market Bay trail, which takes you to a secluded bay where the Royal Britannia used to anchor up and the Royal party would picnic on the beach. Full details of the activities available are in the guide book in the house.

Erisgeir is situated in a secluded yet elevated position halfway between Bunnessan and Fionnphort, so you can tuck yourselves away and relax or head out to civilisation at one of the quaint pubs and restaurants that are easily reached by car. The pubs stock locally brewed beers and malt whiskies as well as most of the mainland usuals. They quite often serve on a last man standing basis too! There are regular events held throughout the summer holiday period including live Celtic bands and celidhs. The restaurants serve food to an excellent standard, notably the seafood. Well worth sampling.
Accommodation:
Erisgeir is a modern, spacious bungalow built by the current owners in the late 1970s. Situated in half an acre of private grounds there are uninterrupted views down to the loch, over to Burg and across the surrounding 2,000 acre private family estate. The house is situated at the southern and less commercialised end of the island so if you are looking for some peace and tranquillity then this is a haven for it.
Erisgeir has undergone a refurb during 2008 to introduce some contemporary comforts including a brand new fitted kitchen. The bungalow has lots of living space and very comfortably sleeps 6 adults (no sofa beds here!). There are two big double bedrooms and one twin bedroom which are serviced by a bathroom with shower and WC and a separate WC. The living space is mostly open plan with a large L shaped living/dining area. One of the most enchanting features of the house is the sun room which stretches the width of the house and catches the sun for most of the day.
Directions:
Mull is accessible by a 45 min car ferry journey from Oban. The service is operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) and runs roughly every 2 hours. However the boat can be busy in the summer season and you may need to book in advance for peak sailings ie Saturdays, Easter Time, school break up days.
When you drive off the boat you have two options left or right. You need to turn left. You will pass through Pennyghael after about 25 mins then Bunessan after about 40 minutes. After you pass a petrol station on the left hand side you will come round a left hand bend and will be able to see the house set back on the right. The entrance is just past the little hill and there is a garage at the start of it.
What's included:
All heating is included. Bed linen and towels are provided.
