The Old Mill Cottage Trotternish, Isle of Skye
|
|
This holiday house entry is due to expire try:
The Old Mill Cottage is situated at the north end of the spectacular and mysterious Trotternish peninsula of Skye, one of the most beautiful of the Scottish islands. It overlooks Kilmaluag Bay and the northern end of the Trotternish Ridge is to the rear. The extraordinary rock formations of the Quiraing and the Old Man of Storr are part of this famous ridge. For the most part easily walkable, the ridge affords spectacular views to the Torridon mountains on the mainland to the east, the Cuillins to the south, and the Outer Isles to the west. Trotternish is also renowned for its geology and palaeontology - significant fossils and dinosaur remains having been discovered here.
This lovely Isle of Skye cottage is near the towns of Staffin and Uig. Boat trips are available from Staffin, and from Uig there is a ferry to the Outer Isles - Harris and North Uist. There are craft workshops nearby - candlemaking, woodworking and pottery, art galleries, a museum where you can see dinosaur bones, and an outdoor activities centre. Only a few miles along the road is a ruined castle, and there are fascinating ancient monuments in the area. A heritage museum shows how life used to be lived on Skye up until recent times - fascinating to see what has changed in Scottish island life and what hasn't.
There are also very good pubs, restaurants and shops on the island - including superb craft shops and art galleries, where you can often watch local craftspeople at work. Skye has some world-class restaurants too. The northern end of Trotternish is remote and is a stunning part of the island away from any tourist crowds. A holiday on the Isle of Skye offers so much to see and do - you can still have a romantic journey by boat and 'come over the sea to Skye' or there is now a bridge to get here even quicker!

Location:
The Old Mill Cottage is on the northern end of the Trotternish peninsula, north of Uig and Staffin. It is normally reached via Portree, the capital of Skye. There is a reasonably regular bus service which goes around the Trotternish peninsula, and the drive from Portree is very beautiful. Portree is itself well-served by coaches from Kyle of Lochalsh, Inverness, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The bridge to Skye goes from Kyle of Lochalsh and once on the island you then take the road through Broadford and on to Portree.
