What comes into your mind when you consider spending your next family holiday at the British seaside? Overcrowded beaches, late-night drunks, rampant commercialism and grotesquely overpriced amenities? If that doesn't float your boat, imagine treating your family to a holiday on a magical island where . . .
there are a dozen sandy beaches to choose from and the only overcrowding is when the seals haul out to pup
there are no traffic lights or roundabouts and in the unlikely event of a traffic jam it will soon be sorted out by a couple of grinning sheepdogs
if the person driving past you doesn't give you a friendly wave it's because they're a fellow visitor, just arrived
no-one ever locks their doors or removes their keys from their car's ignition
you can play 9 holes of golf on a 2600 yard course for just 5, including hire of clubs!
swimming pool, adventure playground, heritage centre, archaeological sites and almost every other visitor attraction is free
you can fly fish for brown trout of 8lbs and over - some of the biggest in Britain
you can sip a sundowner or a morning cup of coffee in the back garden of your cottage while watching seals fish in the surf just a yard or two below your feet.
Kiln Barn is a fully equipped self-catering cottage with a magnificent 'sealside' location on the island of Sanday, Orkney. So named by the Vikings because of its unusually sandy coastline, Sanday has a permanent population of 500, divided roughly equally between native Orcadians and 'incomers' from the rest of Britain. Sanday can be easily reached by both plane and car ferry from Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney.

Accommodation:
Kiln Barn underwent a complete refurbishment at the end of 2012: the cottage was completely rewired, replumbed, replastered, refloored, repainted and refenced. The boiler, modern heating system, fridge/freezer, microwave, TV/DVD, washing machine/drier, beds and mattresses are all brand new, as are the 100% Egyptian cotton towels and bed linen.
The owner of Kiln Barn has run another self-catering cottage for three years so understands that visitors don't want a fusspot hovering around them all the time; at the same time, many guests appreciate having someone 'on call' to sort out any problems which may arise or give them the benefit of local information. The owner of Kiln Barn lives less than 10 minutes' drive away and is happy to provide as much or as little of a personalised service as his guests require. Without charge, he is happy to: drive you to Kiln Barn from the ferry terminal or airfield; show you around the cottage; shop for any groceries you may require prior to arrival; arrange bike hire for you. For a reasonable extra fee he is willing to: provide casting lessons and ghillie services; hire you his own boat on North Loch with electric motor, oars, drogue, angling seat, net, rod and tackle; take you in his Land Rover on a 2 hour orientation tour of the island.
The accommodation comprises a sitting/dining room with a large new picture window looking directly out onto the breaking surf which at high tide laps at the cottage's own sea wall. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a utility annexe with washing machine/drier, sink, clothes horse, ironing facilities and a dart board. There are 3 bedrooms, one with a kingsize double bed, one with 2 single beds and one with 2 adult-sized bunk beds. The bathroom has a bath, basin and WC.
Outside there is a large fenced-off lawn to the front of the property where children can play safely. On the seaward side of the cottage there is a smaller lawn with stone furniture and barbecue facilities; from here steps lead down to the seashore. There is plenty of off-road parking space. The biggest skies in Britain, no street lamps and the nearest neighbours live more than 100 yards away.
Directions:
From the ferry at the south end of the island head north, following signs to Lady Village. From here continue driving north, passing the golf clubhouse after about three miles. One mile further on you will come to Newark Farm and a pronounced curve in the road where sits Kiln Barn: the only white-painted building in the vicinity so impossible to miss.
