Argyll has a stunning coast line which stretches over 2800 miles, longer than the coast of France. It also has huge stretches of inland lochs. Finchairn Cottage sits tucked away from everyone on a remote hillside looking down on Loch Awe, one of the longest fresh water lochs in Scotland.
The self-catering cottage is part of Ederline Estate which is a working farm only a short drive from the coast. The Western islands are easy to reach with regular ferries from Oban, Tayinloan, Claonaig and Kennacraig which are all under an hours drive north and south of Finchairn Cottage. The coast has some fantastic beaches. Private boat trips can be arranged locally to get closer to the marine wildlife and to go fishing or a visit to the Correyvrecken, the third biggest whirlpool in the world.
There are a number of fine Argyll gardens open to the public that thrive in the warm gulf stream conditions. Stonefield Castle, Crarae, Duntrune Castle, Arduaine and Achmore gardens on the Isle of Gigha. If you are a golfer the area has many challenging golf courses at Lochgilphead, Tarbet, Oban, Inveraray, Machrihanish and on the Islands of Gigha and Arran. The local area is steeped in history with many archaeological sites with the greatest concentration of them being in the Kilmartin Glen only a few miles away. There is a excellent museum in the village dedicated to the history of the area.
On Ederline Estate there is excellent fishing on over 18 hill lochs with wild brown trout and a stocked rainbow trout loch. Loch Ederline has fantastic pike and perch fishing. Also boats and canoes can be hired on Loch Ederline. Loch Awe is also well known for its abundance of pike, trout and perch. There are also a host of other local activities such as pony treking, cycling (cycle hire is available) and an indoor swimming pool.
This lovely country cottage is a great base to see it all from or just unwind from the busy world in pure peace and quiet which Finchairn can certainly offer.

Accommodation: Finchairn Cottage is situated on its own on a secluded hill side and commands spectacular views over Loch Awe. Finchairn is a traditional shepherd's cottage retaining many of the original features. You enter by the large newly built conservatory which has comfortable seating to admire the views. There are double doors off the conservatory into a small hall with coat hooks over the heater. There is a door to the left which takes you into the largest twin bedroom. The door to the right takes you into the sitting room and dining area which has a large raised open fire. Off to the right is a small corridor which has a door leading into the kitchen and a door into the bathroom. The bathroom has a walk in shower and wash hand basin and loo with two windows with views up the hill at the back.
The kitchen is very well equipped with dishwasher, fridge/freezer,microwave and of course a cooker! There is one window which looks across the side of the valley where the farm track comes up to the cottage. Off the sitting room the stairs lead to a landing which has two doors leading off it. One to the large twin room and one to the double bedroom. Both these rooms have vaulted ceilings with velux windows which look out back down to Loch Awe.
Out side at the back of the property is the well stocked log shed. There is a stock proof fence around the cottage to form a large secure garden, if you remember to shut the gate to keep the sheep out! The red deer will jump the fences so hence there is no formal gardens, only lawn and rocky outcrops. There is ample parking beside the cottage for your car. There are garden tables and chairs so you can sit outside in the pure peace and watch your neighbours i.e. the deer, sheep and the surrounding abundance of wildlife.
What's included:
Price includes logs for the fire (but they do need to be split) and all bed linen and towels.
What's not included:
Electricity is metered and charged at cost at the end of your stay.
Cottage directions:
Glasgow to Lochgilphead (approx 98 miles) Take the A816 Oban road out of Lochgilphead heading north. Through Kilmartin and 2 miles the other side take the first turn to the right sign posted Ford / Cladich on the B840. Follow the road for 1.5 miles past Loch Ederline on your right and into the village of Ford. Opposite the white Ford Hotel the road turns sharp right over a bridge up the hill and out of the village. After a mile you will see Loch Awe in front of you and you will travel along the shore for 1.5 miles. When the trees stop on your right hand side there will be a farm drive on the right signed Finchairn. Go up the drive over two cattle grids then turn left into farm yard, cross the yard and through the gate. You will cross the burn over a wooden bridge. Finchairn Cottage is on the hillside in front of you about 0.5 miles.
