Big Sky Lodges Muir of Ord, Ross-shire, Highlands
|
|
These two extremely comfortable Scandinavian log cabins are in a picturesque part of the highlands, with gorgeous views towards the mountains. The lodges are beautifully appointed and extremely well-built - they are situated well apart from each other to ensure privacy - but of course both can be booked if you are two families wanting to holiday together but have your own accommodation. The surrounding countryside is home to roe deer and red kites - and if you are lucky you might see a pine marten, golden eagle or a red squirrel. This is a great place for bird watching and looking at the fauna and flora of the highlands.
Ross-shire is a fabulous part of the highlands and there is lots to see and do nearby. Inverness is just 10 miles away (good shops, restaurants, theatre and museums) and a trip on Loch Ness is a must for many visitors - it is a great day out even if you don't spot the infamous monster! The west coast is within easy reach of the lodges and the Isle of Skye, Inverewe Gardens and Ullapool can be visited for the day.
Two miles away from the lodges is the Glen Ord Distillery - a fascinating place to visit and watch some of the finest malt whisky in Scotland being made. There are plenty of castles to visit too - Cawdor Castle (very romantic) and Moniack Castle (where Scottish wine is made from local ingredients!) are close by. Children will love the Black Isle Wildlife Park where they can feed and touch animals and birds. If you visit Lairg then you can have an unusual shopping experience in the highlands and visit the small Harrods there. At the Falls of Shin near Lairg you can also watch salmon leaping up the waterfall and walk through the forest where otters and deer live.
Outdoor pursuits are plentiful - walk from the lodges through beautiful countryside or climb nearby mountains (there are many Munroes in the area). There are over 20 golf courses within an hour's drive of the lodges, including the championship courses at Nairn and Royal Dornoch. There is excellent fishing on the local rivers - both for salmon and trout. The owners' farm the surrounding croft and are on hand to welcome you - they provide lots of small touches which make this such a great place to stay.
