There are mountain bike routes, local and long-distance cycling routes, forest trails, riverbank walks, and hiking trails in secluded areas. The cottage is situated approximately 2 miles from the Samye Ling Tibetan Centre - the first Buddhist monastery in Europe (1968) which is open to day visitors and offers a wide selection of courses, a shop, a monastery, a cafe, and a temple. A mile away from the settlement is Eskdalemuir village with a Café Bistro that has great lunches and home-baked cakes, a tiny store offering handcrafted goods and there are frequent exhibitions of the artwork of local artists. Lockerbie and Langholm are just thirty minutes away and the pretty market town of Moffat (about 35 minutes) is lovely for a wander around its independent shops and has excellent pubs and places to eat, a Farmer’s Market is there every 2nd Sunday of the month that is well worth a visit. The Cottage is in a Dark Sky Area so on a clear night the stars are quite incredible and there is a huge range of wildlife with some of the most iconic and endangered species in Scotland in the area.
