West coast holiday cottage - Eco and family-friendly

Sithean selfcatering, Taynuilt, Argyll

This fabulous self-catering house is situated on an organic farm in Glen Lonan, a wildlife enthusiast's idyll. There is fantastic walking and cycling from the door, and 10 minutes walk away is Angus' Garden, a stunning woodland garden built around Loch Angus. The farm has 800 Scottish blackface sheep and a herd of Luing cattle. Just 2 miles away is the village of Taynuilt with a butcher's shop, grocery store, post office and hotel. From the pier you can take a boat trip up Loch Etive where you can watch eagles, red deer and seals in the some of the most unspoilt scenery in Scotland.

A few miles away is the Hydro Electric Power station at Ben Cruachan; a tour will take you right inside the mountain. If you prefer to stay outdoors Ben Crauchan is a wonderful climb, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking. Also nearby is Inverawe Smokehouse where you can buy delicious smoked fish, and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle on the shores of Loch Awe. Twelve miles away is the picturesque west coast town of Oban, where you have a choice of fabulous restaurants serving locally caught seafood, and from where you can do some island hopping to Mull, Kerrera, Lismore or further afield. The Oban Seal and Marine Centre and the Oban Rare Breeds Park are very popular with children. Glen Lonan is an unspoilt stunning part of Argyll, and is also a great base from which to enjoy the rest of Argyll with its lovely beaches, castles, gardens, lochs and hills.

Accommodation:

On the entry level there is a porch which is ideally suited for drying wet boots and clothes. This leads on the one side to a shower-room and a double bedroom with a mezzanine and twin beds, and on the other side to the kitchen.

The kitchen, dining and living areas are open plan with a vaulted ceiling, and are attractively divided by a split level floor and earth brick walls. There is a wood burning stove in the living area, and under-floor heating throughout the house.

Downstairs there is a double bedroom, a twin bedroom and a bathroom with a sauna which has direct access onto a decking area. The design allows an intimate connection with the birch woods from the lower level. The house contains everything you should need for your holiday, including full kitchen facilities, but should you fancy a break from cooking, locally home cooked meals can be provided.
